JOOS Orange Customer Review

I just received an early Christmas gift and it was my ever so coveted Joos Orange. In a word it is Fabulous. Fabulous in it’s simplicity, fabulous in it’s build and fabulous in it’s design! It’s everything I had hoped!
One feature I truly appreciate about this device is that it does one thing, and it does this one thing very, very well. Obviously it was created to set the benchmark for all personal solar devices and I appreciate the fact it isn’t chock full of gimmicks and unnecessary distractions. My Grandfather used to say “If you’re going to do something, then do it right and do your best!” Apparently someone involved with Joos Orange received the same sage advice.
Never in my life have I contacted a manufacturer to say thanks for making something so great, never (and I’ve gotten some cool things over the years). But today is different, today is a first, today I say thank you for making something so great!
Kind Regards,
William Anderson

Solar Components’ JOOS Orange Personal Solar Charger Wins Best of Innovations Award for the 2011 CES International Trade Show in the Eco-Design and Sustainable Technology Category

CAMPBELL, Calif. – November 10, 2010 – Solar Components today announced that its JOOS Orange™ personal solar charger has been selected as the 2011 International CES Best of Innovations award winner in the Eco-Design and Sustainable Technology product category.
According to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), producer of the prestigious Innovations Design and Engineering Awards, the JOOS Orange received the top score in the Eco-Design and Sustainable Technology category, besting all other products entered in the competition this year.
“We are honored to win a Best of Innovations award and would like to express our gratitude to CEA”, said Jamie Bullen, CEO of Solar Components. “And to be tapped as the top winner in the Eco-Design and Sustainable Technology category means the CES judges feel we have the best ‘green’ product at the 2011 CES trade show. This award belongs to our design and engineering team and speaking for management, we are very proud of their accomplishment.”
Roughly the size of a paperback (5.8- x 8.6- x 0.8-inches) and weighing 24 ounces, the JOOS Orange is the world’s most powerful personal solar charger. Unlike other solar chargers designed to only work under ideal conditions, the Orange turns sunlight into electrical power:

The Orange delivers more than 2.5 hours of cell phone talk time for every hour of sunlight, making it up to twenty times (20x) more efficient than other solar chargers. Additionally, the 20 watt hour Lithium-ion polymer battery of the Orange holds enough power to fully charge more than four smart phones (or six standard cell phones). The suggested retail price for the Orange is $99.95.
“We’ve started initial sales of the Orange and expect to be in full production by January 2011,” Bullen said. “Clearly, that’s later than we had expected, but that’s what happens when you’re a start-up trying to create the very ‘best (personal) solar charger’ on the planet.”
The Orange will be on display in booth 1035J of the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center at the 2011 International CES trade show, January 6-9, 2011.

Solar Components Places Initial Manufacturing Order for its Joos Orange Portable Solar Chargers, which will Now Begin Shipping in the Third Quarter of 2010

Select New York City journalists will be the first to see Joos Orange demonstrations at the PEPCOM Digital Experience media reception, Wed., June 23 from 6-9 p.m. at the Manhattan Pavilion in Chelsea
CAMPBELL, Calif. – June 23, 2010 – Solar Components, LLC today announced that it has placed its initial manufacturing order for its Joos Orange™ portable solar chargers with Singapore-based Eastern Asia Technology Limited (SES: E08.SI), one of the leading Original Equipment Manufacturers in the world for consumer electronics devices.
Solar Components now plans to begin shipping its much-anticipated Joos Orange portable solar chargers during the third quarter of 2010.
“We recognize that we turned the personal solar charging market on its head with our first Joos Orange announcement back in March,” said Jamie Bullen, CEO and co-founder of Solar Components. “We know there’s nothing like the Joos Orange on the market today: a portable solar charger priced at under $100 that works on sunny days and cloudy days, in partial sunlight, in the rain, under water and even after being shot five times by a .22 caliber rifle.
“I also suspect there are a number of our competitors that are praying that we won’t ever ship. But the Joos Orange is real, and as several journalists can now attest (such as Bryan Gardiner at Wired.com), the Joos Orange works just like we said it does.”

Joos Orange to be featured at PEPCOM’s New York City media reception next Wednesday

The first quasi-public showing of the Joos Orange portable solar charger will come on Wednesday, June 23, at the PEPCOM Digital Experience media reception in New York City. Held from 6-9 p.m. (EST) at the Metropolitan Pavilion in the Chelsea District of Manhattan (125 West 18th Street), PEPCOM’s digital Experience is an invitation-only media reception.
Solar Components will have several final pre-production Joos Orange portable solar chargers at the PEPCOM event for demonstration purposes. Journalists interested in seeing the Joos Orange at the PEPCOM media reception can request an invitation at http://www.pepcom.com/press/press.html.

A New Standard in the Personal Solar Power World

New Joos Orange Personal Solar Appliance Will Deliver up to 20 Times the Energy of Existing Personal Solar Devices

Slated to launch in June 2010, the Joos Orange™ (from Solar Components, LLC) is waterproof, rugged and versatile and will deliver more than 2.5 hours of cell phone talk time for every hour of sunlight – up to twenty times (20x) the value proposition of current personal solar devices – for less than $100.
CAMPBELL, Calif. – March 3, 2010 –After working for two years in virtual darkness, Campbell, California-based Solar Components, LLC today announced its first product: the Joos Orange™ (pronounced “juice”).
Expected to ship in June 2010, the Joos Orange is described by the company as the world’s first “Personal Solar Appliance” – a product that delivers more than 2.5 hours of cell phone talk time for every hour of charging time or as much as 20 times (20x) the powering capability of existing personal solar power devices. For these reasons and more, Solar Components™ believes the Joos Orange will establish a new standard in the personal solar power world. Why? Because the Joos Orange is:

  • Affordable (has a suggested retail price of $99.95)
  • Waterproof (will also work submerged)
  • Rugged (polycarbonate case encapsulated in urethane and expected to last for many years of outdoor use)
  • Versatile (works with a dead battery, can be charged by USB, works in low-light conditions, has a replaceable battery and provides status to a personal computer)
  • Powerful (has a large {20 watt hour} Lithium-ion polymer battery, that {depending upon latitude, insolation and reflector use} can generate between 10 to 20 watt hours per day)

“Solar Components makes the best solar charger in the world,” said Jamie Bullen, CEO and co-founder of Solar Components. “We recognize that we’re throwing down the gauntlet by making this claim, but the fact of the matter is that most of the personal solar power devices on the market today are woefully inadequate. The fact that someone can have a personal solar device in direct sunlight for an hour and only power 5 to 20 minutes of talk time for a standard cell phone just isn’t acceptable.
“The Joos Orange is the world’s best because it uses the highest efficiency mono-crystalline solar cell on the market instead of a lower efficiency poly-crystalline cell. We use state-of-the-art electronics to stay on the maximum power point, function in low light, work with a dead battery, charge via USB and communicate with a PC. We’ve encapsulated the Joos Orange with a hard, non-yellowing urethane instead of an epoxy-based coating, and we’ve incorporated a steel heat sink and have ventilation built into a case that is also waterproof and submersible. The Joos Orange also has a large battery to store all the solar energy it receives and it’s replaceable. It fact, everything we’ve done up to this point is designed to set a new standard for excellence in the personal solar power arena – to create a ‘Personal Solar Appliance’ that can be used every day to recharge our electronics and is not just a drawer toy.”

Specification Highlights for the Joos Orange

The following are selected highlights of the Joos Orange specs. Complete Joos Orange specifications can be found online at http://www.solarjoos.com/tech-specs/

  • Battery: Replaceable 20 watt hour Lithium-ion polymer (3.7 volt, 5400mA); big enough to fully charge six standard cell phones or more than four smart phones.
  • Photovoltaics: 5-inch mono-crystalline solar cell with an anti-reflective silicon nitride coating and a maximum power output of 2.6 watts. The cell is connected together electrically in parallel so there are no edge effects.
  • Casing: A 5.8- x 8.6- x 0.8-inch (width x height x depth) thick durable polycarbonate injection molded case that features a steel heat sink to reduce heat, top and bottom ventilation, legs for solar orientation, with an automotive grade urethane used for encapsulating the solar cell and electronics.
  • Electronics: Microprocessor-based maximum power point capability, LED status lights for power production and battery status, along with a low light and a dead battery circuit. The Joos Orange can also be recharged by any USB power source; it ships with a miniUSB connector for charging devices and includes 2-6 adaptors (depending upon configuration). A free downloadable application will be available to show what the Joos Orange is doing.
  • Weight: 24 ounces.
  • Certifications: The Joos Orange is FCC A and B, CE and RoHS certified and also meets the NEMA 6P waterproofing and submergibility standard.

“There are currently 1.7 billion people in the world who don’t have access to an electrical grid and another 1.4 billion people that live with intermittent electricity,” Bullen said. “The sun has the ability to provide energy that, if captured at the right price for these people, will provide them with a continuous supply of energy for all kinds of useful devices. This in turn will help make their lives more productive and enjoyable without a carbon footprint. Our goal at Solar Components is to develop products that harness the sun’s capability in a cost-effective and efficient manner. The Joos Orange is our first step in reaching that goal.”
